Overview

Roskill South is a young, culturally diverse community well equipped with schools, parks and public amenities. Home to Puketāpapa (Mt Roskill) itself, the neighbourhood offers a wide range of recreational opportunities, including walkways, cycleways and places to picnic.

Roskill South is one of Auckland’s most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods with a higher number of people identifying as Pacific, Middle Eastern, Latin American and African than surrounding areas. The people who live here are also comparatively young and households have a higher number of children, according to the latest census data.

The area is only seven kilometres from the central city, which is easily accessible via public transport, including a frequent bus service along Dominion Road. It’s home to May Road Primary School, and Mt Roskill’s three schools; Mt Roskill Grammar, Mt Roskill Intermediate, and Mt Roskill Primary School which are all within walking distance.

There’s a lot of green space for people to enjoy the outdoors, including Keith Hay Park and Winstone Park, while Cameron Pool and Leisure Centre and the Akarana Golf Course have excellent sport and recreation facilities.

Vision

The vision for Roskill South is to increase the number and quality of homes available to residents to buy or rent, including state homes for Aucklanders who need housing assistance. At the same time, we’re upgrading infrastructure and amenities so that public places and essential services are brought up to date and made safer and more durable.

The development in Roskill South is replacing approximately 260 state homes that are past their best with up to 920 new, warm, dry, healthy homes. About 310 of these will be new state homes. The balance will be a 50/50 mix of more affordable homes, including KiwiBuild and long-term rentals, as well as market homes.

The new Kāinga Ora state homes and the market and affordable homes are designed and built to modern standards and will include double glazing, insulation and modern materials and fittings inside and out. All plans go through an urban design review process to ensure they meet a high standard of design quality. There will be a mixture of standalone homes, duplex homes and apartments.

By using the land more efficiently than we did back in the 1950s and 60s when the original homes were built, we will be able to increase the availability of community housing and also build much-needed new homes for the Auckland housing market.

The investment in Roskill South will bring new people to the area and improve the neighbourhood for everyone. New families and students will help the local schools grow, support local businesses, and invigorate the community.
