With its serene bushwalks and secluded bays, Waikōwhai is a nature lover's dream. Bordering the Manukau Harbour, the neighbourhood is home to Waikōwhai Park and Wattle Bay Reserve, which form Auckland's largest urban native forest. This precious ecosystem is teeming with native flora and fauna, including the iconic kōwhai tree that paints the valley in gold each spring and is an important food source for tūī, rosella and kingfishers. This Auckland taonga can be enjoyed by users of the 10km Waikōwhai Walkway.

Vision for
Waikōwhai

The work happening in Waikōwhai is part of the wider Roskill Development being managed by Kāinga Ora. The vision for Waikōwhai is to make a positive difference to the community by improving housing quality and choice and enhancing local amenities. We are increasing the number of high-quality homes, in a range of typologies, available to buy or rent, including social homes for Aucklanders who need housing assistance. At the same time, key neighbourhood infrastructure and amenities will be upgraded so that public places and essential services are future proofed for generations to come. Renovating the neighbourhood will make Waikōwhai an even better place to live.

The development in Waikōwhai is replacing approximately 318 old social homes that are past their best with up to 1,150 brand new, architecturally designed homes designed for the way we live now.

The new homes in Waikōwhai are well designed and built to modern standards. Double glazed windows, cosy insulation and light, bright spaces are just the beginning. The homes have been through a thorough design review process to ensure it meets a high design standard. There is a mixture of standalone homes, terraces and apartments coming to the neighbourhood.
