After a couple of years working together with the community on what makes Wesley a great place to live, we developed a plan for the neighbourhood that reflects their feedback. We shared this updated plan at the community event that took place on Saturday 20 May.
Around 70 people came to Wesley Primary School’s new building, where the Roskill Development team were able to have great in-depth conversations about the stormwater mitigations and transport improvements, green spaces and new homes coming to Wesley.
It was a really positive event, despite the not-so-positive weather. Connections were made, and the community took the time to absorb information and ask questions about the plan for the Wesley neighbourhood.
The Kāinga Ora Tenancy Team were there to answer any questions from current Kāinga Ora customers living in the neighbourhood. The community had the chance to chat with the team about the Kāinga Ora products available to help them buy their first home. There was also the opportunity to take part in a study run by AUT, about the wellbeing of communities where there is housing redevelopment.
It was great to have Councillor Julie Fairey there, and other members of the Puketāpapa Local Board and Auckland Council, who also got involved in the kōrero.
There was a fun whānau-friendly activity facilitated by students from Mt Roskill Grammar, where people could get involved with making Pacifica headbands and flowers out of recyclable materials.
The team from the ARK Collective Project had the sausages sizzling and the lovely people from Ōwairaka Kuia Kaumatua Roopu made sure the tea, coffee and bikkies were flowing. We’d love to say a special thank you to our community partners for supporting us and the community on the day.
The plan means there’ll be more warm, dry homes for the neighbourhood, including state homes, homes to buy, more affordable homes, and homes to rent. There’ll also be more vibrant community spaces, business areas, green spaces, and new amenities to support the growing community.
We’ll also be working with the community, Auckland Council, Auckland Transport, and Watercare to create Wesley’s new parks, public spaces, walking paths, and underground infrastructure, and renovate existing ones.
