Illuminating Matariki in Roskill South

Matariki Lights 3 v2

This winter, Roskill South residents came together to celebrate Matariki through a beautiful light installation that transformed the neighbourhood into a space for reflection, connection and hope for the year ahead.

Created by local artist Tania Remana, the installation was displayed at the ‘Roskill Box’ at the Roskill Development Information Centre on May Road, inviting the community to engage with the stories and significance of Matariki.

At the heart of the project was a special "Star Station" in Turners Reserve, where residents were encouraged to create wishing stars and share their hopes and aspirations for the future. These contributions became part of the wider installation, creating a meaningful reflection of the community's collective voice.

The artwork also highlighted important stars within the Matariki cluster, including Pōhutukawa, which is associated with remembrance, and Hiwa-i-te-rangi, the star of hopes, dreams and aspirations. Through light, storytelling and creativity, visitors were able to connect with the traditions and values that Matariki represents.

As the installation illuminated the winter evenings, it provided a memorable way for residents to come together, celebrate culture and reflect on both the year that has passed and the opportunities that lie ahead.
